On Saturday afternoon (11th July) our Tulips faced a newly promoted Boston Town FC in our second pre-season game. The boys got off to a quick start once again with Jack Roberts causing all sorts of problems for the Boston defence.
In just the fifth minute of the first half, Roberts was brought down and awarded a penalty after an impressive run into the Poachers’ box. Up he stepped and confidently delivered as he placed the ball into the bottom left corner sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting Spalding 1-0 up.
Following the goal, Spalding continued to control possession with few chances being created in the final third. Boston’s Fraser Bayliss proved to be a threat as he had a couple of dangerous runs at the Tulips defence but lacked any finishing impetus.
Dan Jarvis went close just a few minutes later after Roberts fired a decent effort at the Boston keeper, which rebounded onto Jarvis’ boot and eventually onto the crossbar.
Then, in the 30th minute, Ceesay danced his way into the box after some excellent link-up play with Tom Pugh, rolling the ball past the keeper to put the Tulips 2-0 up. Heading into half time, Spalding looked the better team, calmly keeping the ball in the midfield and keeping Boston at bay.
10 changes ensued at half time with Janneh staying up top supported now by Ben Fowkes who had a couple of lively runs at the Boston backline. Alfie Bendle also came on as a passing outlet, effortlessly playing balls into the left and right channels for the wingers to attack.
In the 57th minute, the Tulips found themselves 3-0 up after Janneh teased a shot across the face of goal which was salvaged by Fowkes who curled his effort into the top right corner of the Boston goal.
On the hour mark, the Poachers responded with Fraser Bayliss rocketing the ball past Dan Wilks into the roof of the net to make the score 3-1. After conceding, Spalding continued to attack looking promising down the wings. However, in the last half hour, chance after chance went begging after many shots were blazed over the bar.
Overall, an impressive display for the boys meant back-to-back wins for Spalding with full focus now on next Saturday’s pre-season friendly (18th July) against Scunthorpe United.
