The Tulips were narrowly defeated on Saturday following a 1-0 loss to league leaders Chester FC. The hosts left it late, relying on Daniel Ward to poke home from close range to salvage all 3 points.

It was the Seals that started on the front foot, forcing a reaction from Crook twice in seven minutes. Midfielder, Connor Woods, was at the forefront of the attacking output.

Despite the early pressure, Spalding managed to build momentum staying composed in the middle of the park.

Woods continued to pile pressure onto the Tulips’ backline winning a corner on the half-hour mark after a hopeful cross was intercepted by Tosin Olopade.

The hosts looked a lot sharper attacking-wise, enjoying much of the half in the final third; however, Spalding did well to soak up any danger that was hurled their way.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, the Tulips had their closest chance of the game so far with Roberts teasing in a cross to Cybulski that was punched away by Chester’s keeper.

When play resumed, the hosts looked for an opener through Burroughs who lashed a shot at Crook who parried the ball away for a corner.

Then, on the hour mark, Ceesay chased down an inviting ball that was lofted into the box, but Hewitson was there to collect the ball comfortably.

Several minutes later, we earned a throw-in that was taken quickly to Byrne who whipped in a cross to Pugh, but the keeper was there once again to comfortably pursue the threat.

Tom Pugh went close yet again as he found himself the target of a Straughan-Brown free kick, glancing his header just wide of the post.

Then, in the third minute of extra time, the crushing damage was dealt by Chester as Dan Ward bundled in a tenacious goal from 6 yards out.

A disappointing end to a remarkable defensive performance from the Tulips sees us fall to 13th in the standings.
