Jimmy Dean’s men were held to a goalless draw at home to Macclesfield FC on Tuesday evening (18th August). The Tulips were dominant in multiple spells throughout the game but could not find a way past Christian Dibble in the opposing net.
In the opening minutes, the Silkmen invited the pressure from Spalding playing the ball between the centre-backs as they looked to break down a compact Tulips side.
Roberts countered quickly down the left flank shortly after, finding Fowkes who fired straight at the keeper which rebounded behind for a corner.
Spalding looked comfortable and composed in midfield, closing down every ball that threatened the backline. With every attempt to stretch the midfield from Macclesfield came a turnover in Spalding’s favour.
A few wayward passes towards the end of the first half frustrated many around the ground as the Tulips were playing into Macclesfield’s hands.
It was a very even first half with both sides benefitting from sloppy passes and creating good chances. However, Spalding looked the better side, staying composed and solid defensively.
Early into the second half, Cybulski replaced Fowkes to offer a more direct threat and target for teammates. He fulfilled his role excellently as every lofted ball was aimed at the towering striker.
On 70 minutes, Kelly teased a wonderful ball into Cybulski who directed his header just wide of the upright. The momentum was now in Spalding’s favour as they countered with every given chance.
The best chance of the game came just minutes later as Cybulski was gifted the ball, with which he dribbled to the byline and rolled the ball into Roberts who skied his effort over the bar.
A couple of late corners followed, striking hope into the supporters, but every effort was desperately cleared by the Silkmen. An unfortunate result as the Tulips looked certain to net a winning goal, but a very valuable point against a promotion-seeking side.
We jump up to 11th place, Come on You Tulips!
