Backed by a packed, sell-out crowd, the Tulips looked destined for heartbreak when they found themselves behind late in normal time, but an extraordinary comeback saw Jimmy Dean’s side rescue the tie, force extra time, and ultimately secure their place in step two football.
After a tense opening spell with both sides applying pressure, Spalding struck first in the 36th minute. Jack Roberts delivered a dangerous corner which was met perfectly by Yusifu Ceesay, whose header finally broke the deadlock and sent the home support into celebration.
Spalding took that advantage into half-time, but Real Bedford responded seven minutes into the second half when Ben Stevens produced a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner to level the score.
The Tulips pushed hard to regain control and looked the more threatening side, but with just eight minutes of normal time remaining, Real Bedford turned the game on its head. Josh Setchell found space inside the area and his effort, despite Liam Moore’s desperate attempt to intervene, ended up in the net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
With promotion slipping away, Spalding were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when Ceesay was brought down in the box following a reckless challenge. Roberts kept his composure from the penalty spot, firing into the corner to make it 2-2 and spark renewed belief around the ground. Moments later, Roberts came agonisingly close to winning it in dramatic fashion, only to see his powerful free-kick crash against the crossbar.
Undeterred, Spalding carried that momentum into extra time and needed just three minutes to retake the lead. Bartosz Cybulski showed quick feet inside the box before firing home from close range to swing the final back in Spalding’s favour.
A crucial defensive moment followed when Tosin Olapade produced a superb goal-line header to deny Conor Tee and preserve the advantage heading into the final period.
As Real Bedford threw everything forward, Spalding remained resilient before delivering the decisive blow in the 118th minute. Breaking quickly on the counter, substitute Ben Fowkes stayed calm under pressure and slotted home to seal a famous 4-2 victory, triggering incredible scenes as fans flooded the pitch to celebrate one of the greatest moments in the club’s history.
A historic day for Spalding United — promotion to the National League North and a new chapter written in blue and yellow.
